Motherboard mainly contains a micro processor and a main memory is built in it. All sorts of external storage devices, sound cards, and other things are all connected to the main motherboard. Even the hard disk is also connected to the motherboard.

The main function of the motherboard is to connect between all computer devices with its microprocessor. Thereby motherboard helps in making the computer run fast and thus help in improving the performance of the computer. The computer has many components and all these components are either inbuilt in the motherboard or it is attached to the motherboard with the help of sockets or ports.

As designs for PCs have been evolving, formations and functions of motherboard have also been changing. Motherboards nowadays are more advanced than when they appear several decades ago. Previously, motherboard use to come only in the form of built-in processor and card slots which one uses to connect directly to storage devices, memory card etc. In the early 90’s, IC, or integrated chips were added to motherboard. The IC’s use to boast up the speed of many things like keyboard, floppy drive, and serial and paralleled ports. But nowadays motherboards support a huge lot of more functions as compared to the motherboards of the 90’s. Today’s motherboard they support keyboard, floppy drive, serial and parallel ports and in addition to that they support a various types of advanced devices which are helpful in audio, video, storage devices.

Motherboard is such a device which helps the computer to get connected with all its devices through ports or sockets. There are both internal and external connectors and ports in the motherboard which helps the motherboard to stay connected to the other devices. As there are many ports or connectors attached to the motherboard among them the important ones are as follows: PCI(peripheral component interconnect), AGP(accelerated graphics port), chipset, CPU(central processing unit), motherboard battery, IDE connector, DIMM(double inline memory module), FireWire controller. And the various types of ports are COM communications, USB, parallel, display connectors, PS/2 connectors, game port, sound card connectors.
