How to update device drivers

It is important to update hardware devices occasionally for a number of reasons which can range from compatibility problems to updates from manufacturers. For instance you will need to update the device driver after you have installed some new piece of hardware as it might have overwritten the previous driver for a different or new hardware. As these problems get known to the manufacturer they usually issue new drivers which can address the known issues in your system. Updating device drivers can solve most of the hardware problems but it is important you know how to update the device driver.

A simple method to update your device driver is by using the Device Manager. The device manager is a utility which is already built in windows operating system. There are a number of easy methods to launch this utility and one of the simplest ways is to go to your control panel and click the device manager from the given list. There are also other options to access the device manager which can be done through the system icon found on the control panel or can just right click ‘My Computer’ and choose its properties. However if you use windows vista operating system then just type in Device Manager in your search box and you will find the device manager link after the search.

Regardless of the method you use to launch the device manager, it would list all the hardware that is found on your PC. However if you come across a device that is listed with a yellow warning icon triangle on it then it means the device is not running properly. You can then choose the device that you need to update and later choose the ‘Update Driver Software’ given in the sub menu. Here you will have two options to choose from firstly, search automatically for updated drivers that can search for both your hard disk and also the internet for any updated device drivers and the other option is browser my computer for driver software. This option will be very useful when you have updated driver on the disk or is stored in the folder.

Choose the method you need and follow the instructions. If you prefer looking at the details of the driver before updating it then just click properties after right clicking the device and you will have the driver tab. You will find information about the driver and also options to update the driver, uninstalling the driver, disabling and enabling the driver and rolling the driver back. This roll back feature is generally used if the update work is not expected.

However if you manually need to update the device driver then you will have to first create a backup copy for all the original drivers and also find a copy for the new driver. There are software available to back up your device drivers or can just look up all the device drivers files in driver details section for driver tab of a particular device in the device manager. Make sure that you write down their locations and also copy the files individually to folder or disc.
