FireWire logo

FireWire is one of those fastest peripheral standards that have been developed which makes it great for usage with multimedia peripherals like video cameras and some other high speed devices like latest version of printers and hard disk drivers. It was firstly integrated into iMacs, Power Macs, MacBook, MacBook Pros, and in iPods. The FireWire ports have been integrated to several other products of computers, dating back to Power Macintosh G3 computers. All of these machines would include the FireWire ports that operate to about 400 megabits / second and latest machines would include the FireWire ports which support 1394 b also operate up to 800 megabits / second.

The FireWire is cross platform implementation of high speed serial data bus and is defined by IEEE 1394-1995, the IEEE 1394a-2000 and the IEEE 13394 b standards which could move a large amount of data between the peripheral devices and computers. It features the hot swapping, simple cabling, and transfer of the speeds up to 800 megabits / second.

It is found that most of the multimedia devices have been adopting FireWire technology also for some good reason. FireWire helps in increasing the speed of movement of the multimedia data and the large files also would enable easy connections of the digital consumer products which include digital video tapes, digital camcorders, set top boxes, music systems and digital video desks, directly all to the personal computer. In fact, the FireWire technology of Apple was honored at Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, receiving 2001 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award for getting the FireWire’s impact on television industry.
